This [ceramic sarcophagus rim](https://collections.mfa.org/objects/151471) is representative of burial customs in the ancient Greek city of Klazomenai during the 6th century BCE, a time when the use of coffins was unusual in the Greek world. The surface of the rim is decorated with painted figures of warriors, sphinxes, and wild animals, but major portions of the imagery are missing where the sarcophagus experienced loss. Hear about conservation efforts and learn how these losses were restored to allow the scenes to be better understood.
