Professor Patricio Del Real, Assistant Professor of History of Art and Architecture at HAA, will be part of a panel discussion which follows the premiere screening of Borderlands, the sixth season of Van Alen Sessions at the Van Alen Institute. Produced in partnership with The New Yorker, Van Alen Sessions is a short-documentary series highlighting current debates about urban infrastructure.
Borderlands visits six border towns in California, Texas, and Mexico to investigate how urban design can increase cross-border collaboration, strengthen social and economic networks in sister cities where the local economies are linked, and mitigate the environmental impact of construction of border walls in delicate ecosystems.
Following the film’s premiere, Stephania Taladrid of The New Yorker will moderate a panel discussion with the filmmaker, Merete Mueller; Martita Abril, Mentor, Immigrant Artist Program, New York Foundation for the Arts, and performer, choreographer, and curator; Steven Alvarez, Associate Professor of English, St. John’s University; and Patricio del Real.
Presented in partnership with SVA MA Design Research, Writing & Criticism, this screening is free and open to the public.
This season of Van Alen Sessions is supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Fledgling Fund.
