Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art Awards Professor Necipoğlu Lifetime Achievement Medals for Contributions in Asian Art

The National Museum of Asian Art has announced its 2023 recipients of the Freer Medal, a lifetime achievement award that honors individuals who have substantially contributed to the understanding of the arts of Asia throughout their career. HAA PhD candidate Louis Copplestone awarded the Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellowship

Congratulations to HAA PhD candidate Louis Copplestone for recently being awarded the Jane and Morgan Whitney Fellowship in History of Art and Visual Culture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Louis’ major field is South Asian art and architecture, with a focus on interactions between architecture, other forms of cultural production, and religious thought. He is writing a dissertation on the buildings built for Buddhists in eastern India and Bangladesh after the 9th century CE.

Two HAA Seniors Win Hoopes Prizes

HAA graduating seniors Lisa Zheng and Gavin Bernard Moulton have won 2020 Thomas Temple Hoopes Prizes, for their theses “Yes She Can: Female Artistic Production in Parisian Art Markets, 1737–1820” and “Şişli Mosque: The Changing Aesthetics and Politics of Mosque Building, Restoration, and Calligraphy in the Turkish Republic, 1923– 1957” respectively.
