The Surface of Things: A History of Photography from the Swahili Coast

Workshop with Dr. Prita Meier, Associate Professor of Art History, Department of Art History & the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU)

Prita Meier will discuss her new book, The Surface of Things: A History of Photography from the Swahili Coast, which repositions Africa’s islands and archipelagos at the center of global photographic histories. In her workshop, she will focus on the archival politics of the book and the challenges of writing about transoceanic circulation without losing sight of historical contingency and cultural difference.
