Anthony Calnek, HAA Class of '84

Over the past three decades, Anthony Calnek (HAA AB, Class of ’84) has held executive positions in the non-profit and commercial sectors, with a particular focus on communications and marketing within the arts. After graduating Harvard with an A.B. in Fine Arts, Calnek worked as an editor for various arts publications. In 1990, Calnek joined the staff of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, rising to become Deputy Director for Communications and Publishing. Over the course of 16 years, he built an international publishing program, launched the Guggenheim’s web site, and oversaw its retail, press, and marketing departments. In 2006, he was named Vice President for Communications and Marketing at the New York Public Library, leading the first major rebranding of New York’s premier non-profit in decades, and launching the public phase of its transformation master plan. In 2008, Calnek joined Sotheby’s as Worldwide Director of Media Services with overall responsibility for editorial content, the web site, and video production. In 2019 he was promoted to Co-Worldwide Head of Marketing, a role in which he has led several initiatives that have transformed the way this 278-year-old company engages with its most important clients, attracts new business, and sells art and other cultural treasures in a rapidly changing environment.
