Professor Jeffrey Hamburger To Release New Book, "Flesh and Fabric: The Raiment of the Passion in a Crucifixion by Pietro Lorenzetti" On November 1st

Pofessor Jeffrey Hamburger's latest work, "Flesh and Fabric: The Raiment of the Passion in a Crucifixion by Pietro Lorenzetti" is set to be released November 1st through Officina Libraria.

"The early formation of dynastic families in medieval Europe was often associated with the foundation of female monasteries. This alone is indicative of the considerable political, social, and religious importance of such communities for self-conception of these families, as well as for the establishment of the regional power and influence of women’s monasteries over many generations. In spite of their significance, however, many of these institutions are not well known or researched. This is especially true for the oldest monastery in Bohemia, the Benedictine Convent of St. George’s in Prague, founded as early as the tenth century, which endured over a millennium until the French Revolution. No less neglected is the female community that coexisted with the Augustinian canons at Klosterneuburg, which fell into total oblivion after its dissolution in 1568. This volume is dedicated to these two female communities, which stood at the center of power in Bohemia and Austria respectively, and discusses their rich heritage from historical, art-historical, and musicological perspectives."
