Frode Sandvik

Frode Sandvik is a PhD affiliate at the University of Oslo and a curator at the Kode Art Museums in Bergen, Norway. His PhD project explores an exhibition of works by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) that toured the United States in 1950–51. Conceived as a case study of canon formation, the project will examine the network of actors, institutions and organizations involved in the realization of the exhibition, concurrent debates over modern art, the significance of national interests and Cold War cultural diplomacy, and in what ways the exhibition may have helped shape the understanding of Munch’s art in the postwar era.

Sandvik’s research interests include 20th century art, exhibition history, art historiography, and collecting. He has contributed to several publications on modern and contemporary art, most recently to the upcoming anthology Baselitz. A Life in Print (Skira, 2025). Among his recent curatorial projects are The Square’s Heart. Works from the Erling Neby Collection (Kode, 2023–24), It Might be Beautiful. The Art Collector Rolf Stenersen (Kode and the Munch Museum, 2022–23) and Edvard Munch. There are Worlds Within Us (Kode, 2019–2020).
