Jiwon Lee

Early Modern

Jiwon Lee studies the interpenetrating relationship between art and science by focusing on early modern metal sculpture. Perceiving each work as a compound of form, material, and technology, she explores how traveling metal sculptures contributed to the circulation and production of scientific knowledge in early modern Italy and Spain.

Jiwon’s interdisciplinary research interest stems from her studies at Seoul National University, where she received her B.A. and M.A. in art history. Her master’s thesis on Alessandro Algardi’s Baptism of Christ examines how the artful treatment of two fluid matters, water and silver, constitutes Algardi’s strategy to gain patronage from Pope Innocent X.
