Timothy Hampshire

Timothy Hampshire (Tim) studies medieval art with a focus on Late Antiquity. He is especially interested in the early Christian period in Rome, including book culture, epigraphy, and narrative art. His dissertation project reexamines the illustrations of two Late Antique Virgil manuscripts in the Vatican Library as visual examples of Virgil’s complex reception during the fourth and fifth centuries.

In addition to his art historical work, Tim holds a secondary field concentration in classical philology. He received his BA in Politics from New York University in 2014 and his MA in the History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania in 2022. He is also a graduate of Penn’s post-baccalaureate program in classical studies (2020) and the CUNY Latin and Greek Institute (2018). This year, he is based in Rome as a Frederick Sheldon traveling fellow.
