Timothy Hampshire

Timothy Hampshire (Tim) studies medieval art with a focus on manuscript illustration. He is especially interested in the visual reception of classical texts, images of authors, and the book arts in their broader context, including paleography, codicology, and the history of reading and learning. His dissertation project focuses on early Virgil manuscripts in the Vatican Library. 

In addition to his art historical work, Tim holds a secondary field concentration in classical philology. He received his BA in Politics from New York University in 2014 and his MA in the History of Art from the University of Pennsylvania in 2022. He is also a graduate of Penn’s post-baccalaureate program in classical studies (2020) and the CUNY Latin and Greek Institute (2018).

From 2026-2029, Tim is a Paul Mellon fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts. His work has also been supported by the Medieval Academy of America. He is currently based in Rome.
