This course will explore the medieval capital and trading station of Ani (mod. Northeast Turkey), the former royal capital of the Armenian Bagratid dynasty, and treasure house of architecture, sculpture, and painting. Ani is one of the few uninhabited medieval cities in the world. We will discuss the city in terms of architectural and art history, archaeology, history, and cultural heritage.
