The seminar will focus on topics relating to the social and political history of Byzantine culture in the centuries between the end of Iconoclasm and the conquest of Constantinople by the Crusaders (c. 850-1204). Topics under consideration will be eg. imperial ideology, the relationship of church and state, public ceremonies, cultural and political interactions with its neighbors such as gift exchanges, popular cults and every-day life, and others. However, not all can be covered so the final selection for enquiry will be decided at the beginning of the semester according to students’ interests.
