Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship

The Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship provides support to students in the visual and fine arts, including art history, conservation, studio art and photography, for travel and living expenses outside the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii in accordance with a program of independent study or other activities approved by the fellowship selection committee.

The $19,000 fellowships are funded by income from the Mortimer and Sara Hays Endowment at Brandeis University.

To be eligible for the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship, an individual must have received an undergraduate degree from Harvard or other eligible institution, no more than three years prior to the start of the fellowship year. Graduating seniors are eligible to apply, but must receive their undergraduate degree prior to the start of the fellowship year on July 1. The fellowship supports independent travel and study. Recipients may not be enrolled in graduate school during the fellowship year.

  1. One official or unofficial copy of each undergraduate and graduate transcript.
  2. Two letters of recommendation from individuals who know you and are in a position to discuss the merit and viability of your project and your ability to complete the project successfully. Download the letter of recommendation form (PDF).

For candidates submitting proposals in the visual arts or art conservation only:

  • Please submit work samples directly to your institutional representative.

The deadline to submit your practice application form is February 16, 2024.
