The Department of History of Art and Architecture is delighted to announce the appointment of Cécile Fromont as a professor in our department. Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art Awards Professor Necipoğlu Lifetime Achievement Medals for Contributions in Asian Art

The National Museum of Asian Art has announced its 2023 recipients of the Freer Medal, a lifetime achievement award that honors individuals who have substantially contributed to the understanding of the arts of Asia throughout their career. Suzanne Blier Honored for Being an “Ambassador of the Yoruba (Nigeria)”

Professor Suzanne Blier was honored on September 10 with an award and trophy for being an “Ambassador of the Yoruba (Nigeria)” during a two-day Event in Chicago at the Malcolm X College and the DuSable Museum, where she also delivered the event’s Keynote Address. The program reads in part: “Suzanne Blier was bestowed a Yoruba  (Nigeria) chieftaincy title, Otun Yeye Obalufon (‘First/Right Mother of Obalufon’) for her work on Ife art and history by Oba Aderami Adedapo, Secretary General of the Yoruba Council of Yoruba for her work during her stay in Yoruba land.”
